Mandalay markets are still
as vivid and busy as 200
years ago, almost nothing
has changed.
Mandalay is a important
place in Myanmar culture,
business and Buddhist
religion with dozens of
monasteries und Buddhist
retreats plus meditation
retreats in the city and
vicinity. Aside of a
Mandalay market, actually
there are several big and
small markets, a centre
of economic
transactions and
communications. It is a main
transit point, where Chins, Kachin, Shan and most
upper Myanmar do trade and
business. In resent years
business at Mandalay
markets, trade, real estate
and economic in general got
a real boost by any means,
since hundred thousands
of Chinese people from
Yunnan province fled their
disaster prone area to
settle in the Mandalay area,
there was obviously a deal
between the Myanmar and
Chinese government.
The real problem for for
the Myanmar side started
when the Chinese started an
awful inflation and
today (2011) most local
Myanmar's fled the
city center because no one
from the local population
can afford the prices the
Chinese created. This Chinese
Tsunami hasn't stopped yet,
prices of goods at any
Mandalay market keep on
rising with the continuous
influx of Chinese people.
Tensions between the locals
and the Chinese immigrants
are rising. Since the
Chinese have access to
investment capital through
their clan and family
structure its easy for them
to outbid and outsmart the
local Myanmar people.
Anyway a Mandalay market
is almost around every
corner and many markets just
start at a street in the
morning and disappear after
sunset. There are a couple
of shopping centers in
Mandalay but everything is
on a very basic
|
|
level since the people
have no
access to any
investment
capital, banks
are practically
not existing in
Myanmar anymore
after the great
crash in the
90ties. The
markets are also a great
Mandalay shopping
destination.

A
Mandalay
market
is a
great
place to
spend
some
time and
watch
the
people.
Many
markets
in
Mandalay
and
Myanmar
in
general
are real
street
market
means,
the
goods
are
spread
right on
the
road,
and
stalls
are only
a few.
The
people
don’t
want to
waste
money on
the
stalls,
on top
of it
the
goods on
the
street
can
easily
packed
up
quickly
when
they
have to
run away
from
authorities,
since
many
markets
are
illegal
but for
many
Myanmar’s
this is
the only
source
of
income.
There is
also no
difference
between
the
everyday
customers
and bulk
buyer,
the
wholesaler
just
gets
more
discount.
Probably
the most
colorful
markets
are
fruits
markets.
The
fruits
are
always
very
tasteful
and
orderly
arranged
on a
large
plate
made
from
bamboo
or palm
leaves.

Mandalay

Fruits |
A very
lively
Mandalay
market
is
virtually
around
"every
third
corner"
and
covers
food,
fruits,
flowers,
plants,
handicrafts
and
clothes
plus
some
other
items,
other
goods
are
bought
at
shops. A
Mandalay
market
is
usually
not a
big one
but they
are
specialized
in
different
items at
different
markets.
This are
crowded
places
with a
friendly
and busy
ambience.
All
goods
probably
also can
be
bought
at some
shops
and
malls
but at a
Mandalay
market
the
items
are
typically
cheaper
as in a
shop and
it is
possible
to
negotiate.
Even as
Myanmar
is a
very
save
country,
probably
the
safest
of all
south
east
Asian
countries,
be
careful,
there
are
sometimes
pickpockets
and
other
thieves.
Myanmar
markets
somehow
show the
variety
and
knowledge
of
Myanmar
people
to
create
fruits
and
flowers.
Myanmar
flowers
are a
similar
subject,
since
the
country
has all
possible
climate
regions,
from the
ice
mountains
of the
north
with
south
east
Asia's |
|
highest
peak the
Mt. Hkakabo Razi, this is
northern Kachin State
to the
tropical
regions
further
south a
variety
of
fruits
and
vegetables
is
grown,
actually
every
day the
trucks
from the
north
and from
Shan
State
bring
oranges,
apples,
pineapples,
bananas
and
almost
all
other
know
fruits
to the
markets
in
Mandalay,
Yangon
and
elsewhere.
This
is also
interesting
with
flowers,
at
markets
in
Yangon,
Mandalay
and
other
parts of
the
country
beautiful
home
grown,
roses,
lilies
and
dozens
of other
great
flowers
are for
sale. In
Thailand,
Singapore
and the
countries
of the
region
they
import
them
from
Europe,
it
doesn't
make
sense
but its
a fact.
On top
of it,
all this
is
extremely
low
priced.
From
time to
time I
decorate
the
rooms
with
this
flowers
and
other
flowers
I don't
know the
name and
I have
never
seen
those
outside
Myanmar,
one set
of
lilies
is about
$2,- in
Thailand
they
charge
at least
$ 15,-
and
that's
only a
few
hundred
meters
away and
imported
from
Europe,
strange
things
isn't it
